D & R Meats was established by David Davies in 1985 and now run one of the largest auction fleets in the country. They are also a worldwide importer and exporter of meat products.
D & R meats have been trading at Penkridge for approximately 5 years. They offer quality meat products at competitive prices. They stand on Wednesday, Saturday and Bank Holiday Monday markets.
As well as markets, they also have a wholesale business selling products to other market butchers and butchers shops around the country. The business HQ is based at Old Arley near Coventry but they operate nationwide.
The friendly teams headed up by Rob on a Wednesday and Perry on a Saturday always add a lively atmosphere to the market as they promote the offers of the day. The current top selling meat is chicken with both whole chickens and chicken fillets consistently topping the sales list.
Dave the founder of D & R Meats told us his favourite meat is a nice sweet leg of lamb, commenting ‘you just can’t beat it’. He also added that the most unusual meat they have ever sold was ostrich but this hasn’t yet made it to the weekly stock list for the market!
They are happy to take pre-orders for Christmas. Don’t forget we will be holding a market on Christmas Eve and D & R Meats will be in attendance.
D & R Meats are running a special promotion throughout December offering up to 50% off all Turkey Products. With Turkey remaining the nations favourite for Christmas Dinner why not pop along and take advantage of this offer.
Dolly Cakes and Beans Dolly Cakes and Dolly Beans stand side by side on the market and work together to offer customers a unique market experience. Dolly Cakes, run by Holly Bennett offers a wide range of freshly baked cakes while Dolly Beans run by her mum, Karen, sell coffee beans and hot drinks. Together the two stalls operate a makeshift café in the market hall where customers can buy a hot drink and a cake (at a special meal deal rate) and sit down at the quaint tables to enjoy a natter. Holly has been a market trader for about 5 years and has been standing at Penkridge Market for the last 4 years. Karen took on the existing coffee stall at Penkridge about 2 years ago when the previous stall holder, John, retired.
Holly makes all the cakes she sells on the stall herself, with the most popular cakes being her scrumptious chocolate brownies and yummy lemon cakes.
When asked what got her started in this line of business she replied “I have always loved baking although my mum (Karen) used to ban me from the kitchen for making a mess. Then she gave me a cupcake recipe book and I couldn’t stop baking. I was unemployed at the time and was making far more cakes than we could eat. So in the end I decided that I could sell the cakes to make some money and that’s how it all started. I was also really proud of my creations and wanted to share them with as many people as possible.”
Keeping it in the family, not only do mother and daughter have adjoining stalls Holly also added she chose to come to Penkridge because “her Nan and Grandad have a stall here and they recommended it to me”. Holly added “I enjoy trading at Penkridge as most of the customers are really nice and friendly, they sit down and have a chat with us.”
It takes Holly two whole days to bake everything ready for a market day. She tries to ensure she has around 250 slices of cake (in approximately 16 varieties) on sale as well as a few savouries such as Sausage rolls. We asked Holly what the strangest request she has ever had was, she couldn’t quite decide between a German Friendship Cake or the wheat free, egg free, dairy free, sugar free cake!
Karen was a regular visitor to the market and when she got wind that John, the coffee man, was looking to retire she says she “saw an opportunity to do something that I would enjoy so I took over the stall and I have really enjoyed it.”
The stall sells a large variety of traditional and flavoured coffee beans from around the world as well as a selection of loose leaf teas and instant coffees. Karen also sells all her products as hot drinks for customers to enjoy straight away.
Karen comments “the coffee I sell (even the instant) is really high quality and I am the only stall on the market that offers flavoured coffee. Of course my products are also much cheaper than certain high street brands.”
Karen grinds the coffee beans to meet the requirements of each individual customer so the coffee will always be suitable to use at home, no matter how you like to prepare your coffee.
Since taking over the stall Karen comments “I have over quadrupled the range of hot drinks available, I now offer not only instant coffee but freshly ground coffee and loose leaf tea as well as a range of hot chocolates. My hot drinks are a great way to sample the coffee beans and make sure you like them before you buy!” The bestselling product is the Irish Cream Coffee.
